World Ocean Day - Make it stand out We have been exploring the concept of plastic pollution in the ocean in a child-friendly way. We made up a small tub of water added some plastic sea creatures and lots of shredded paper and the children had to try and remove the paper pollution using their fine motor skills - squeezing tongs to pick up and place rubbish in a bin and free the sea animals. We have been watching non fiction short video's online of how pollution affects the ocean life and also how we can all help. We have also been reading key texts such as Barry the Fish with Fingers, Somebody swallowed Stanley and Saving Tally. Children attending a full‑day session will need to bring a packed lunch. Funded Entitlement Sessions 15‑hour funded children can attend either a morning or an afternoon session, accessing 3 hours per day. If parents would like their child to attend further sessions, these can be added as an extended session, charged at our standard hourly rate. 30‑hour funded children may attend: Monday to Thursday: 8:45am – 3:15pm Friday: 8:45am – 12:45pm If parents would like their child to attend on Friday afternoon, this can be added as an extended session, charged at our standard hourly rate. Enrichment and Extra Activities We offer a range of optional extra‑curricular activities to enrich children’s experiences at preschool. To support these, we ask for a voluntary contribution of 50p per hour. We create challenge through our use of scaffolding and interactions with the children and teach their next steps through our provision instead of taking children away to a table. For our young ones e.g. 2 years, we have a large sand tray with opportunities for pattern making, digging, pouring but when our children visit outdoors there is more of a focus on sand play with the opportunity for language development and we add some small world resources like desert animals, small world people, and/or small blocks to construct with. So much of our assessing is minute-by-minute. It’s scaffolding children’s learning. For our older children, it’s about giving kind but precise feedback that helps them to reflect on and develop their learning. Lots of ‘data’ about children won’t actually help us to ensure that any individual child makes great progress, or overcomes difficulties when they are struggling, is a close and detailed look at what their difficulty is and how we can help them overcome it. We want our assessment information to celebrate every child’s progress - whether that’s small steps or huge strides. We also want it to pinpoint children’s needs, so we can help them quickly. We have found that working on ‘evidence’ and ‘tracking’ can take us away from the place where we make the most difference. That’s with the children: listening to them, developing conversations, playing with them, and teaching them new skills and concepts.
