Healthy Eating

We know that the experience of a variety of different foods at an early age increases acceptance of new foods, and provides a more diverse diet with the range of nutrients, vitamins and minerals needed for health. At Cygnets Preschool, we take positive steps in providing appropriate amounts of energy and nutrients while encouraging the development of healthy eating habits.

Packed Lunches

Use insulated lunch bags and ice packs as refrigeration isn’t available.

Use easy-to-open containers that promote children’s independence and all lunchboxes and containers are clearly marked with your child’s name.

The packed lunch needs to be nutritious. Please visit NHS lunchbox ideas and recipes and Food for Life’s packed lunches guidance.

Ensure you encourage a variety of nutritious foods that are easy for children to eat independently.

No nuts, or eggs due to serious risk of anaphylactic shock for children with severe allergies - children’s lunch boxes are checked prior to giving the contents to the children to ensure any risks from potential allergens or choking hazards are managed

Pack age-appropriate foods, avoiding choking risks such as whole grapes, popcorn, or large chunks of food, cut grapes and cherry tomatoes in half and lengthways.

You are not required to provide a drink with your child’s packed lunch. Water is the best drink for children with food.

We provide gentle encouragement for children to try new foods in a pressure-free way and offer help opening containers and encourage children to eat suitable portions.
